Abstract

Church News analysis of official Church membership statistics comparing every U.S. state's Latter-day Saint population in 2000 to the most recent available figures (Dec. 31, 2025), covering 25 years of growth.

Findings for Latter-day Saints

U.S. membership grew from 5.21 million (2000) to 6.93 million (2025), a 33% increase.
Membership increased in 49 of 50 states; California was the only state with fewer members in 2025 than in 2000, despite remaining the 2nd-largest state population.
Highest percentage growth: North Dakota (131%), Tennessee (96%), Arkansas (85%), Texas (82%), North Carolina (70%); D.C. grew 187%, more than any state.
Largest numerical gains: Utah (+576,368), Texas (+178,239), Idaho (+134,477), Arizona (+128,817).
Largest 2025 state populations: Utah (2.21 million), California (725,648), Idaho (482,905), Arizona (442,094), Texas (395,964).
